School has been out for weeks now, but before your kids start complaining of boredom, remind them that in a place like SoCal, there are endless ways to take advantage of our long, golden days. If you’re fresh out of ideas, the L.A. Parent team shares our summer rituals, favorite hidden gems and must-have treats that we seize each summer to ensure the season feels complete.

New Swan Shakespeare Festival

A couple of years ago, my mom surprised me with tickets on my birthday to see “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” at the New Swan Shakespeare Festival hosted at UC Irvine. Ever since then, it’s been a tradition for my mom and me to see a production on my birthday. I never liked reading Shakespeare in school, but I love watching Shakespearean performances. I particularly enjoy the beautiful theater that New Swan sets up in the middle of UC Irvine’s campus. The warm lights shining through the summer night as someone performs poetry is my favorite way to end my birthday. –Ash Wang

Palm Desert

My family and I love going to the desert for July 4th weekend. We stay together in our house and enjoy the fireworks from our backyard. We love swimming and playing board games as a family. After dinner, we usually get Handel’s ice cream and watch a movie. In the mornings, we get breakfast from our favorite restaurant, Wilma & Frieda. The homemade pop tarts and cinnamon rolls are amazing! We also love heading to 123 Farm, where they have unique festivals like the lavender festival we went to last year. It’s my kids’ favorite weekend of summer. –Chelsea Parrish

Summer looks like lotus blooms and swan boat rides at Echo Park Lake. PHOTO BY CASSANDRA LANE

Echo Park Lake

I love that we have this wetlands oasis just on the other side of Downtown L.A. Early in the morning, there are more Canada geese than people here, and they make you move around them as you get your steps in; this is their world, and we’re just allowed to co-exist in it. People from all walks of life flock to this bountiful lake to work, fish, daydream, take their lunch break and exercise. My favorite time to visit is in late spring and early summer, when the lotus flowers bloom and the lotus pads are thick and emerald, catching the sunlight as they sway against the water. It’s easy to find parking around the park, and yummy spots like Stories Books and Café and Little Fish Echo Park are just a short walk away. –Cassandra Lane

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long” at the Hollywood Bowl

The season is not complete without a concert at Hollywood Bowl. For Elena Epstein’s family, that must-see is “The Sound of Music Sing-A-Long.” PHOTO COURTESY HOLLYWOOD BOWL

This is two of my favorite things wrapped into one: A night at the Hollywood Bowl with a showing of my favorite movie on the screens, with the Philharmonic playing in the background. Is there a better way to spend a summer night than at the Bowl? Bring food, wine, family or friends. It’s such a beautiful setting. Arrive early for this show because people dress up as characters from the movie, and they are invited on stage prior to the show. We started going to the Hollywood Bowl when our daughters were in early elementary school and have continued as they have become young adults — with the Sing-A-Long being the first show we look for on the schedule. –Elena Epstein

Theatricum Botanicum

The Shakespeare productions at Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon have a long and loyal following. PHOTO BY IAN FLANDERS

In high school, I fell in love with Shakespeare — and Topanga Canyon — through Theatricum Botanicum’s summer theater camp, learning Elizabethan songs, sonnets and monologues among the oak trees. Summer became synonymous with the magical outdoor theater, and to this day my summer isn’t complete without attending the theater company’s signature production, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Now that I live in East L.A., I love driving out early so I can stop by Hidden Treasures to browse the eclectic mix of clothes, accessories and trinkets followed by a picnic in Theatricum’s gardens before the show. –Nina Harada

Zuma Beach

It takes me less than five minutes to throw a beach chair, towel, snacks, sunscreen, a book or magazine and my boogie board into the car. The short prep time is part of what makes this a great excursion. The beach takes minimal planning. From there, it’s pretty much 30 minutes until I’m set up in the sand at Zuma Beach — and the relaxing begins. When the heat comes to the Valley, my escape is to hit the beach, and it doesn’t get any better than Zuma. I enjoy the cooler weather, the waves and the fact that I can usually find (free) parking along Pacific Coast Highway. It’s total serenity. –Ron Epstein

Salt & Straw: Berries, Berries and More Berries

Zuma Beach is an easy and much cooler escape for L.A. Paren Publisher Ron Epstein, who lives in the San Bernadino Valley. PHOTO BY RON EPSTEIN

Salt & Straw is an ice cream shop that, along with being delicious, is known for its unconventional flavors such as pear and blue cheese and strawberry-honey-balsamic with black pepper. The shop has a set menu of flavors available year-round and a seasonal menu with flavors that rotate every month. My favorite monthly menu lands in July, when all of the flavors are centered around berries. My love for berries only increases in the July heat, so enjoying a scoop of the goat-cheese-marionberry-habanero ice cream at the Salt & Straw in Downtown Disney is a summer staple. I especially enjoy eating my ice cream in one of the rocking chairs by the fireplace in the Disneyland resort lobby while being serenaded by Disney songs played on the piano. –Ash Wang

Newport Beach

My family and I love driving down to Newport Beach for the day. We go to the pier and get frozen chocolate-covered bananas, our favorite! We usually walk on the beach and put our feet in the ocean. We love spending the rest of the day at the outdoor shops and eating dinner at True Food Kitchen before heading back. It’s always a quick trip, but it feels like a little vacation. –Chelsea Parrish

For years, I dreamed of working from home, eschewing L.A. traffic and carving out more quality time with family. In 2020, that dream became a reality because of a nightmare: the pandemic. But even when much of the world went back to office work, my publishers made our remote status long-term. While I enjoy the ease of working from home as much as I had once envisioned, there are days I’d rather be anywhere else. Thankfully, coffeehouses aren’t the only option.

Enjoying an alcove of sunshine and comfort on the rooftop at Santa Monica Proper Hotel. PHOTOS BY CASSANDRA LANE

When construction chaos recently took over my house, I traded the incessant drilling and drywall dust for ocean breezes by booking a day of “resort working” at Santa Monica Proper Hotel’s rooftop via ResortPass.

My corner cabana — with just the right mix of sun and palm shade — became the perfect spot to edit, eat and enjoy vacation-like vibes. Whenever I looked up from my screen, I saw people lounging in the sparkling turquoise pool. This scene, backed by the Santa Monica mountain range and a wide swath of sky, helped open my creative vision in new ways.

No longer closed in by the walls of my home and the invasive sound of construction, I could breathe a little easier, soak up some vitamin D (after lathering on sunscreen) and hear and see other humans in real life! Before you remind me that the grass is always greener from the other side, I’m not ready to go back into an office full-time. Remote work really is my jam. But knowing that I can easily work from one of L.A. County’s beautiful hotels any time I need a break from home is refreshing.

Why ResortPass is a game-changer for remote workers
ResortPass lets you book luxe hotel amenities — such as cabanas, spas and pools — without an overnight stay, making it easy to turn any workday into a mini getaway. Day passes start at $25 and can increase depending on where you want to go and what kind of amenities you would like to access.

Booking is easy. On the ResortPass website, I entered my preferred location (Santa Monica) and date, clicked “all” for the amenities option, then browsed the list of participating hotels. The list included customer reviews, cost, icons symbolizing which amenities were available (pool, towel service, bar, food, etc.) and links to the hotels’ websites.

The pitch for a day at Santa Monica Proper Hotel let me know it was the choice for me: “Escape to a luxurious alcove at Santa Monica Proper Hotel for a day of pure relaxation. Savor the ocean breeze, enjoy personalized service and unwind by the rooftop pool with breathtaking views. Indulge in gourmet bites, sip refreshing cocktails and recharge in serene, stylish comfort. Treat yourself to an unforgettable day of bliss and tranquility.”

On the day of my poolside workday, I made sure I had chargers for my phone and laptop, a notebook, my reusable water bottle, sunscreen and trail mix. Located at 700 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica Proper Hotel is walking distance from the beach. Designed with coastal flair and natural tones, it is branded as a hotel with a “looser kind of luxury.” I easily found metered parking around the hotel, but since it was a workday, I decided to valet park, which was $40.

The fattoush salad at Calabra.

After I checked in at the front desk, staff directed me to the elevators leading to the rooftop. I sighed with pleasure when I saw my alcove — a corner with a lush couch that curved around a wooden table. Blessed with a sunny day, I was thankful the cabana was tucked under a squat palm tree with fronds that fanned over my workstation.

From Calabra, the hotel’s rooftop hotel that serves up Mediterranean and California cuisine, I treated myself to an oat milk cappuccino, truffle fries and the fattoush salad crowned with large falafels that burst with aromatic spices and boasted a crips golden-brown shell and a tender, flavorful center.

How to book your own work daycation
Booking through ResortPass is seamless — just select your date, choose your cabana and get ready to work in style. Even though you’re working, you’ll feel like you’re on vacation — especially if you take your break in the pool.

It may be widely known for being a place that houses books for anyone interested in reading, but visitors and members of the L.A. County Library and Los Angeles Public Library systems know that L.A.’s libraries are about far more than books.

From job readiness to story time with pups, library activities encapsulate fun, community, mental health, family assistance and, of course, library services. And you can access these opportunities in person and online. A great place to learn more about the L.A. County Library is through its YouTube channel. We love keeping tabs on the L.A. Public Library through its exciting and quirky Instagram account.

For more information about what’s happening within the county system, visit the events section of its website. Below are some of the programs offered at the L.A. County libraries below. Check the L.A. Public Library’s events page and services and programs section for services, events and programs that are just as robust.

Work Ready is a series of workshops for those looking either to enter into the workforce, are looking to make a change in their careers or simply want to remain current on changing workforce needs. There are different courses, including a chance to update your resume, be exposed to new ways of working or learn what employers are looking for when hiring. The length of the sessions range between 75 to 90 minutes. Most of these classes are virtual and happen weekly.

Meditation – Few would argue that we are living in stressful times. Accordingly, there is an area within the library system dedicated to meditation. Here, you can learn various techniques that can help you to reduce your stress levels. These meditation sessions are an hour long and are broken and into two sections. The meetings, led by instructor Doug Frankel, are not recorded.

Get to Know Libby  – If you know that you’d like to spend more time using the library, knowing how to use it is crucial. That’s why this program operates virtually monthly. Get schooled on how to check out an audiobook or ebook.

Smarty Pants Storytime  – Want to help your young ones love to learn and get ready for school? Well, check your local branch to sign up for Smarty Pants Storytime, where kids ages 2-5 can start building strong learning habits. Young kids become familiar with routine and are exposed to books, singing songs, movement and rhyme, readying them for school. It is all done only with the help of a parent, guardian or caregiver. Classes are held in person on Friday mornings. The time may vary depending on the branch, but sessions run for 30 minutes. Register online.

Baby-Toddler Storytime Similar to the above-mentioned program, this one operates with a similar agenda of helping the little ones acclimate to a bigger world. The library designed the program for babies to toddlers ages 0-2 to help them build up their cognitive and motor skills through pre-literacy programs and singing songs, rhymes and movement. And just like Smarty Pants Storytime, these babies and toddlers can only participate if they’re accompanied by a parent, guardian or caregiver. The time is also a 30-minute course held on Friday mornings. Please check your branch for the exact time as they may vary from branch to branch. Register online.

New Parents Engagement –  If you’re new to the system and want to learn more about it, you can have your questions answered through this program, including how to do research on a particular topic for a class assignment for the young scholar in your life, how to get a library card or how to use the various services the library provides. These sessions last 30 minutes and are held virtually.

Heart and Hand – This is a lecture series that covers various topics. Some are focused on children; others may be something fun, such as discussing a book or author geared toward adults only. Topic themes are often associated with the national month themes, such as Women’s History Month. The talks run for an hour and happen virtually once a month.

Author Talk –  If you love reading and want to hear from your favorite author, this series may be the right one for you. Held on Tuesdays for one hour, the time varies just like the author in conversation. These virtual conversations are available after registration. Check ahead of time to find out who the next author is and when the talk will take place.

Trailblazers in Conversation – If you need honest advice or want to learn from someone you admire, check out this series of people who have broken down the roads you’ve only begun to travel. The conversations happen once every few months and last an hour. The next one is in March.

There are several other programs for kids, including a book club, reading with the dogs for children and art classes… just to name a few. These events are in person, with an estimated run of an hour for most events. Please check the site and the event calendar for more information and don’t forget to register beforehand.

For anyone who may need assistance pursuing education on any level, the library also offers help in that area. Find out more here.

On the library’s YouTube, you can find videos that cover everything from events to other essential information that only the library can provide.

From fields to festivals, there are plenty of places to see flowers bloom this spring in California.

With one of the driest winter seasons on record, no one is expecting any sort of major bloom event this spring. However, there are still places to catch seasonal flowers, which perhaps feel even more miraculous because they found a way to blossom anyway. From flower farms to wildflowers, here are a few of our favorite ways to savor spring’s blooms.

Flower Fields & Festivals

Cherry Blossom Festival

On March 30 the vibrant blooms of Torrance’s renowned cherry blossom trees explode in color during the 2025 Cherry Blossom Festival. This free, family-friendly event promises a vibrant tapestry of cultural performances, handcrafted treasures, and mouthwatering cuisine.

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve blooms orange and yellow through May.

California Poppy Festival

The City of Lancaster’s annual festival returns to the AV Fair & Event Center April 25-27. The California Poppy Festival honors our state flower with live entertainment, rides, festival food and more. Lancaster is home to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve where poppies and other wildflowers bloom from around mid-February through May.

Underwood Family Farm

In the spring, Lompoc Flower Fields feature vibrant varieties of flowers.

The Ventura County farm is known for growing fresh fruits and vegetables, in addition to hosting popular family-friendly events like Christmas on the Farm and Fall Harvest Festival. But each spring they also put on The Tulip Garden Experience featuring over 500,000 bulbs important from Holland. Open daily from Feb. 22 until the blooms are finished, which is about one month from open, visitors can pick their own tulips, hop on a tulip train ride and take photos in front of the giant windmill. Other activities include the animal center, tractor drawn wagon ride, play yard and wings and more.

Lompoc Flower Fields

Artist Alex Heveri’s “Glass in Flight” is on view at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch.

About one hour up the coast from Santa Barbara, the Lompoc Flower Fields are known for their colorful varieties such as Delphinium, Larkspur, Stock and more. From around mid-April through early June visitors can catch these vibrant blooms in the fields or in the wild. Visit Explore Lompoc’s guide to map out your sightseeing route.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

Beginning March 1, visit North San Diego County’s famous flower field to experience its stunning red, orange, yellow, pink and purple Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers. Though these colorful blossoms are the main event, guests can also walk through the enchanting Sea of Sunflowers as they begin to blossom, and the Sweet Pea Maze, a fragrant floral maze. New this year is the Butterfly Encounter, where guests can experience hundreds of butterflies fluttering around them, and artist Alex Heveri’s “Glass in Flight,” an outdoor sculpture exhibit of steel and glass birds and insects.

Central and Southern California Wildflowers

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

The largest state park in California features camping, hiking, guided nature walks and hundreds of flowering plants that bloom each spring. Though this year won’t see a splashy wildflower season as in season’s past, you can still catch some beautiful blooms. Check Anza-Borrego Foundation’s wildflower page for updates on wildflower sightings and conditions.

Carrizo Plain National Monument

According to the Desert USA report, Carrizo Plain National Monument, an enclosed grassland plain 100 miles north of Los Angeles, should have some wildflowers this year thanks to 2.1 cumulative inches of rain for the season. Its wildflowers can typically be seen along the Temblor Mountains and Soda Lake Road. Because Carrizo Plain National Monument is in a remote area, this trip is probably best for families with older kids or those feeling a little more adventurous.

Joshua Tree National Park

Famous for its namesake Dr. Seuss-like trees, Joshua Tree National Park is an easy 2-hour drive from Los Angeles. A popular nature destination for Angelinos, expect long lines at the entrance or plan to visit weekdays and before 8 a.m. to beat the crowds. You can catch wildflowers through June, but due to little rainfall this winter, blooms will be harder to spot.  With many accessible trails off the main road, this is an easy wildflower viewing experience for families.

Theodore Payne Wildflower Hotline

The Sun Valley nonprofit nursery’s famed wildflower hotline returns March 7 and will remain open through May. Wildflower enthusiasts can call 818 768-1802 ext. 7 to hear the best locations for wildflower viewing throughout Southern and Central California.
