My family and I have not stepped inside a zoo for many years, but when we had a collective slice of time last Saturday morning, we headed to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to take a safari excursion and get a peek at the park’s new features.

PHOTO COURTESY SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK

In L.A., we charged up our car and let our newly licensed 17-year-old son, Sol, take the wheel for the 2 1/2-hour drive. On the navigation screen, he punched in the address — 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido — but before he pulled off, I handed him a foldable, laminated Rand McNally map of Southern California so that he could visually grasp where he was going. We live so much on the inside of our screens that our sense of spatial awareness continues to slip away.

Sol opened up the flaps of the map. “Wow, how much did this thing cost?” he asked, incredulous.

“It’s not an ancient relic,” I said. “It was $9.99 and I got it from Staples.”

“Wow,” he said again, his eyes wildly scanning the spread-out map, not knowing where to land.

“Find Los Angeles first,” I said. “Then, go south to find San Diego and Escondido, but take a look at all the towns we’ll pass through first before we get there. It’s like a preview of the drive, and it helps you get your bearings, I think.”

This quick exploration of our route was a prelude to our day of learning through excursion.

Jurassic Park vibes

We had not visited the San Diego Zoo Safari Park since Sol was in elementary school, but driving into the the park, with its jungle-like canopies of trees, elicited a refreshing familiarity. “It makes me want to watch “Jurassic Park” when we get back home,” my husband, Marcus, said.

“Well, Steven Spielberg was influenced by the Safari Park,” our guide, Delaney, told us. The entrance to the fictional Jurassic Park in the movie echoes the entrance to Safari Park, which was opened in 1972 and serves as the sister location to the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park. The Escondido-based park, which mostly houses animals from arid environments, spans more than 1,800 acres that dip and rise like the savannas in Africa and Southeast Asia. It is home to more than 3,100 animals representing over 340 species.

Safari Excursions

While visitors have always been able to enjoy watching the animals by boarding a tram, Safari Excursions is the newest structure at Safari Park. Arriving a little early for our “cart safari” tour, my family and I lounged in the open-air, immersive gathering spot designed with a nod to a Kenyan safari camp, with exposed wood beams, lush greenery, wooden stools, rich textiles and bright wall paintings and textiles.

We listened to the sounds of birds and insects float in and out of the cool, airy space, allowed the photographer to take a family photo of us and discussed which animals we each were excited to see. While we were just a party of three, the lounge area can easily fit large groups of people at one time.

The safari excursions are an additional cost after the paying for park entrance. Options include:

Cart Safari – guided 1-hour cart tour of park highlights for $82 per person

Wildlife Safari – guided 1-hour tour in the back of an open-air truck that rides inside a savanna wildlife habitat for $118 per person (ages 3 and up).

Deluxe Wildlife Safari – For 90 minutes, guests get to venture into habitats representing Africa and/or Asia for up-close views of wildlife for $143 per person (ages 6 and up).

Behind-the-Scenes Safari – This guided 90-minute tour takes you to areas not available to the public, with opportunities to get up close to wildlife for $118 per person (ages 3 and up).

Behind-the-Scenes: Elite Adventure Safari – Here, guests can explore the park on a 3.5-hour tour to learn about how staff cares for wildlife, then hop onto a safari truck and tour the savanna. Some walking required. Cost: $80 per person (ages 3 and up).

We opted for the cart safari, hopping on the cart with a chatty and extremely knowledgeable Delaney as she drove us first around the “Asia” savanna before looping around the outskirts of “Africa.” We marveled at the massiveness of the rhinos and elephants, envied the lions lounging across fields of grass, waved at Frank the gorilla as he rested his foot on a tree stump and watched us watching him.

Msituni eating twigs. PHOTO BY CASSANDRA LANE

I asked Delaney how animal activists in recent years have responded to the safari park. While some activists believe that all animals should only live in the wild, in their original habitats, others — after taking a more intimate safari tour — develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the park’s role in conserving endangered species and extending the life of vulnerable animals through extensive healthcare even while aiming to replicate the animals’ natural environments.

One such success story is Msituni,a four-year old giraffe born at the park who was unable to walk. After months of critical care that included giraffe-sized orthotic leg braces, she gained the strength to walk around 11 months old. We watched Msituni and her older and taller fellow giraffes munch on twigs while Delaney explained that their enviably long eyelashes help keep flies and gnats out of their eyes.

Another source of great pride is that park is home to the rarest breed of horse in the world: the Przewalski’s horse — a critically endangered species of wild horse that was categorized as extinct in the wild until 1996. In recent years, scientists have used tools such as San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s Biodiversity Bank to expand the strength of the species’ population.

Roar & Snore: Glamping with Wildlife

Speaking of eyes, if you love the parks so much you’d like to close your own eyes and spend the night our in the wild, consider checking out the new “Roar & Snore” glamping option. The premium tents feature a queen-sized bed and two portable cots to comfortably sleep four.

PHOTO COURTESY SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK

The tents overlook the savanna habitat where rhinos, giraffes and other wildlife roam freely. The adults-only option allows guests to explore the park after dark, enjoy classic camp activities and hear stories about San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s conservation work around the globe. Cost: $245/person

Unique Safaris

If you like wine or beer with your safari, you’ll want to check out these features:

Sips on the Savanna: Wine Wildlife Safari, Mimosa Wildlife Safari and Craft Beer Wildlife Safari. Enjoy sipping a delicious beverage among the wildlife of the African savanna. Begin with a meet and greet mingle and your first drink in a souvenir aluminum glass. Next, board a covered, open-air safari truck and venture into an expansive habitat for up-close views of giraffe, antelope and more. Then it’s off to a breathtaking viewpoint for more drinks and savory snacks while taking in the sights and sounds of African wildlife.

Note that Wine Wildlife Safari is offered in the winter, Mimosa Wildlife Safari is offered in the summer and Craft Beer Wildlife Saffari is offered in the fall.

Another unique option is the Behind the Scenes: Wild Cat Adventure. Guests can spend the morning visiting the wild cats of the Safari Park. See the park’s wild cats, peek into some of the wildlife care areas to learn what it takes to look after these diverse cats and hear stories about the park’s current conservation projects while traveling in a tour cart with a personal guide.

In the same way that Back-to-School season gets me excited for fall, despite L.A.’s signature late summer heat, so does Halloween Time and Plaza de la Familia at Disneyland Resort. The theme parks’ fall favorite experiences kicked off Aug. 23 and will continue through October and November, featuring a full lineup of family-friendly entertainment.

Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort

From Aug. 23 through Oct. 31, both parks and Downtown Disney District are decked out in seasonal décor, fall-themed dining experiences and more for Halloween Time. The Main Street Pumpkin Festival is back, featuring an assortment of uniquely carved pumpkins, including the iconic giant Mickey Mouse Pumpkin for all your fall photo ops. The Haunted Mansion Holiday gets its annual fall makeover with spooky updates inspired by “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

On select nights at Disneyland Park, thrill-seekers of all ages can celebrate spooky season with Halloween Screams. Haunting toons from Disney’s famous villains fill the air, followed by a fireworks grand finale.

Over at Disney California Adventure Park, the cars at “Radiator Screams” are dressed up in Haul-O-Ween attire. Little ones will love the interactive, music-filled stage show “Mickey’s Trick and Treat,” featuring a not-so-scary story, Halloween songs, bubbles, surprises and more.

Take pictures with Miguel, add personal messages on the Memory Wall, enjoy live music on the Paradise Garden Bandstand and enjoy arts and crafts inspired by “Coco.”

Fall Fun for the Foodies

Fan favorites like seasonal churros and caramel apples are back throughout both parks. But there are many new Halloween Time offerings, like the Pumpkin Swirl Cheesecake at Blue Bayou Restaurant, “Ghost” of Anaheim Burger at the Galactic Grill and Philly Potato Dog at Refreshment Corner. For a full rundown of seasonal treats and eats, check out the 2024 Disney Halloween Foodie Guide.

Filled with anticipation, one half of my family loaded up our car and ventured south on the I-5 Freeway to Carlsbad. Destination: Legoland California Resort. As first timers, we were excited to see some of the Lego-inspired creations, the new Lego World parade with its hosts of beloved characters and Dino Valley.

My daughter Quinn, who lives for a birthday cake and rainbows, was looking forward to celebrating Legoland’s 25th birthday bash and, of course, the magical wizard! Armed with a bag full of snacks and coloring books, we were off to see the wizard. One hour and 45 minutes later, we turned onto Legoland Drive and were welcomed by little Lego statues — certainly the byproduct of a master builder’s vision. We unloaded and crossed over a trumpeted capped drawbridge into our home for the weekend, The Magic Castle Hotel.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of families wrangling kids was a pool full of Legos waiting to be clicked and clacked into some innovative mind’s masterpiece. Children poured in to build, while waiting for their adults; others slid down the slide alongside the stairs or played in the pretend holding dungeon.  My husband Cory and I looked at each other with silent words and loud thoughts, “We definitely are not in Walnut anymore.”  Somewhere between home and Oz, we had teleported into a world of make-believe.

As we pushed the button of the elevator to get to our floor, the wizard himself narrated our ride as we “levitated and flew” between floors. Gems and crystals lit up on the walls of our magic ride until we reached our destination.

In our room, the medieval and digital world coexisted as purple regal tapestry adorned walls and plush beds. Requests are at your fingertips. With one swing of the magic wand (via QR code), your wish is granted — per the digital magic genie. My favorite part of the room was the message on the wall: “You are far more powerful than you can ever imagine.”

Off to Dino Valley

Well-rested and caffeine-fueled, we set out for our first adventure: Dino Valley! As we walked through the land where dinosaurs roam, we caught our first dino sighting: a T-Rex! When navigating from one adventure to the next, sensory guides pose as yellow brick roads for parents. I found this a very helpful tool while exploring activities.

We boarded Coastersaurus, the roller coaster that matches the thrill seeker’s quest for fun, and then Explorer River Quest, a tranquil boat ride for dino seekers. Also new to Dino Valley is Dino Outpost, where little paleontologists get to uncover fossils and build their own dinosaur creations. This was a sensory level 5 for touch and deeply satisfying for my 6-year-old explorer. After a quick wash off of sand, sand and more sand, we stopped off for a quick bite to eat at The Market, a cafeteria style marketplace that offers a variety of food options (great for picky eaters), then it was on to the parade.

Lego World Parade

The anticipation of the parade was felt throughout the park as onlookers began to line the streets. I, too, sat amongst the spectators, between a veteran and his great-granddaughter. The old and the new, united in our excitement. The doors opened and the parade began with flags, bubbles and a celebratory song. The Lego World parade featured the Lego City Fire Truck with a dancing Fire Chief Freya, a swashbuckling ship with Scallywag Pirate, plus Lloyd, Scuba Diver and Hopsy.

The first Lego World Parade!

Capping off the festivities, we had to take a selfie with the 25th birthday cake Lego model. This cake took 400 hours to build, and it consists of more than 200,000 bricks! Finally, now joined by the other half or our family, we wound down with a visit to the Sea Life Aquarium. Here, we encountered sharks, octopus, star fish and other sea creatures enclosed in varying shades of indigo waters.

The beauty of the aquarium, and perhaps Legoland, is that it gives permission for all to simply be. Our little family dined on our last meal at the Dragons Den Restaurant before hitting the road again. Our  Legoland adventure is now tucked away as a sweet memory — somewhere over the rainbow, where builders click-clack, kids slide downstairs, elevator rides are magic and dreams come to life.

This year’s Pixar Fest kicked off at Disney’s California Adventure with a lot of sunshine and a parade called “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!”

During the parade, familiar Pixar pals danced to an anthem designed just for the occasion. “We wanted to go into this parade with a message [that] friendship matters, friendship is a great thing and when we have friends we are better together,” says Robin Trowbridge, show director at Disney Live Entertainment. The parade featured new floats, including “Turning Red,” Luca,” “Soul,” “The Pixar Lamp” and the oldie-but-goodies “Toy Story” and “The Incredibles.”

Taste buds are not excluded from enjoying the festivities, as there are six marketplaces featuring Pixar-themed delights. Some of the notable mentions are The Jolly Holiday Bakery, which will feature a “Luca”-inspired parfait. Rancho Del Zocalo has a Marigold tres leches cupcake, and the Carnation Cafe will have the fried bologna sandwiches inspired by “Up.” There will also be 50 Pizza Planet trucks.

Pixar Fest created a truly immersive experience with other exciting additions, including Club Pixar. Here, the young and the not-so-young can learn dances taken from scenes in “WALL-E” and “Up.” All ages can enjoy a PixarPals Playtime Party at Disney’s Fantasyland Theater. Kids can make crafts and take photos with Pixar characters.

When you need a break, there is a “Short Stop” area where you can watch Pixar shorts and play games. In the evening, get wowed by “Together Forever, A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” with new pyrotechnic enhancements for greater detail and color.

The projection characters even interact with onlookers down Main Street.  Pixar Fest will run through Aug. 4.

On March 4, over a thousand Dino Valley fans dawned their dino attire and danced along to the LEGOLAND brass band at the California Resort’s dino dance party. The celebration commenced with two announcements: the reveal of Dino Valley’s newest costume character, Paleontologist Girl, and the official opening of Dino Valley Land, which is set for March 22 at the Carlsbad park.

This new theme park addition features three thrilling rides, an interactive build-and-play area and prehistoric activities. Hop on a journey through the LEGO DUPLO Dino adventure where your little ones can use cameras to capture the dinosaurs and play hide and seek with them throughout the ride. Young adventurers will also enjoy the Explorer River Quest experience, where they can interact with LEGO dinosaur models along their river expedition. Attendants can explore the prehistoric era at the Coastersaurus ride. The jungle at Coastersaurus is inhabited by LEGO dinosaurs like the 1,100-pound Brachiosaurus and ten-foot tall Parasaurolophus. Another highlight of Dino Valley Land is the Interactive Dino Area where children can build dinos with LEGO DUPLO bricks, uncover fossils in the Dino Dig area and get a chance to meet and greet new costume characters!

But the celebrations don’t end there — LEGOLAND is rolling out their first LEGO World Parade in celebration of their 25th birthday year. The new parade will feature spectacular floats like a LEGO City Firetruck, a pirate ship and more. Sing and dance along as performers in glittering costumes entertain guests throughout the west side of the park.

Los Angeles city officials are working to reimagine the now-closed pony ride site at Griffith Park that, for 74 years, was a beloved place for kids and families. And they are looking for input from the community to help with this mission.

The Griiffith Park Pony Rides program was the largest pony ride operation in the U.S., offering pony rides for children aged 1-14, as well as a party corral for private events. That all changed when, in December of 2022, a contract between the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP) and the concessionaire who oversaw the operation expired and RAP decided not to extend the concession agreement.

The Pony Rides were one of the park’s most popular attractions because they provided a low-cost family activity that was accessible to locals and visitors. Based on feedback from the L.A. City Council, the RAP has initiated a new process to re-imagine the potential recreational and educational activities that could be offered there in the future. In response, RAP has retained the consulting firm PlaceWorks to conduct a public engagement process and perform other related tasks to provide the Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners and the city council with information for future decision making.

Future use of the pony ride site

Over the past year, RAP has been meeting with focused community groups, conducting community pop-ups, hosting online and telephone surveys, and conducted a community open house early this month as part of the city’s efforts to envision the future uses for the area.

The board will review the public’s feedback and provide direction to RAP staff to initiate the process of selecting a preferred new use or pursue further study, if necessary, officials say.

Priorities include ensuring that the Pony Ride site offers activities that are:

  • Youth and family-oriented
  • Affordable and accessible (for all ages and abilities)
  • Educational
  • Fun

Visit this website to read more about additional considerations that will be assessed while planning for future uses.

Online survey

An online survey is available now! This survey provides an opportunity to share your thoughts about the future of the pony ride site. Fill out the survey by March 22 to share your point of view and help “reimagine” the Griffith Park Pony Ride site.  Click here to take the survey.

Community Input

RAP has been reaching out to the community in many ways. Either in person, online, at the park or as part of a focus group, the team has been busy gathering information about what matters most to people as it relates to the reuse of the pony rides site. Take a look at what the community is saying here (or Spanish version) and to get involved yoursel.
